For Immediate Release 4/10/2017

Southeast Baltimore—Wilfredo Abrego was found guilty of second degree rape, sexual abuse of a minor, and third degree sex offense by a Baltimore City judge.

Assistant State’s Attorney (ASA) Seth Giller prosecuted the case.

In 2015, police were called to a residence in the 3700 block of Eastern Avenue in the Highlandtown neighborhood for a reported rape. The mother of a 13-year-old girl told police that her daughter was discovered to be five weeks pregnant after a visit to a physician. The alleged father was 26-year-old Abrego.

According to ASA Giller, Abrego was renting a room in a house where the girl and her mother were living. Abrego claimed the relationship was consensual.

Based on the statements provided by the victim’s mother and other witnesses, authorities began looking for Abrego. He was eventually apprehended and prosecuted after his DNA was found to match that of the 13-year-old’s aborted child.

“As the chief prosecutor of Baltimore City and the mother of two young girls, this unconscionable crime truly affected me and I am glad we were able to prosecute this defendant to the fullest extent of the law,” State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said. “We must do all we can to safeguard those most vulnerable among us, ensuring that the likes of this defendant cannot repeat these horrible acts.”

The defendant, who faces a maximum of 45 years in prison for his crimes, is scheduled to be sentenced June 15, 2017.
