How the System Works
The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all crimes committed with the confines of Baltimore. This includes everything from traffic violations to homicides.
To fulfill this critical responsibility, the Office currently employees more than 200 prosecutors and another 200-plus support staffers.
In most cases, the State’s Attorney’s Office gets involved in cases after an arrest is made or after a citizen complaint is filed with the Commissioner. Prosecutors then see cases through bail review, investigation, grand jury hearings, arraignment, trial, and sentencing.
