The Felony Trial Unit is the largest of the Circuit Court Divisions. Within the Unit Assistant State's Attorneys are divided into two sub-groups; Violent Crimes and General Crimes. The Violent Crimes team is responsible for the prosecution of all non-specialized violent offenses within the City of Baltimore, ranging from first-degree assault to attempted first-degree murder. Prosecution of all felony narcotics and handgun cases are the responsibility of the General Crimes team. Enhancing prosecutorial effectiveness is the utilization of the vertical prosecution model. Under this model a single prosecutor becomes responsible for the case or offender from Grand Jury Indictment to final resolution. By doing so, prosecutors are better able to address public safety concerns and access offender culpability.
